What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy that provides non-medicinal and non-surgical methods to help the body heal itself. The practice views the body as a unit, considering its structure and functions to be interrelated.

The body is also seen as self-regulating, capable of healing and defending itself through its normal functions. This capacity is however compromised if some functions are disrupted. The goal of osteopathic treatment is to re-establish balance and the regular functions of the body, allowing it to heal itself.

Areas of Treatment

  • Behavioural – psychological, social, anxiety, depression, stress, sleep, sexual activity, values, attitudes, beliefs
  • Biomechanical – bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, tentorium and falx, fascia (posture and motion)
  • Fluid Respiratory – thoracic inlet or outlet, diaphragms (arteries, veins, lymphatics, respiration)
  • Metabolic Energy – internal organs, immunity, glands or viscera (all metabolic processes, hormones, regulatory processes, digestion, etc.)
  • Neurological – brain function, sensory and motor nerves, autonomic nervous system (sympathetic (the "fight or flight" response) and parasympathetic (the calming of the body).

How Do Osteopaths Carry Out Their Treatment?

Osteopathy is a hands-on manual form of treatment. Using their palpation skills and gentle touch, osteopaths are able to read the body’s pain and feel specific problems in its anatomy. This allows them to identify the right course of action and create a therapeutic touch that facilitates healing.

What Is the
Goal of Osteopathy?

Osteopathy’s goal is to restore proper balance and function, allowing the body to heal itself through its own natural processes. It also educates the client about what is working in their body and what is not, while teaching them professionally directed self-care methods to achieve their goal of restored health. It’s a practice that empowers clients to help themselves!

Osteopathic treatments can be used for pain reduction, wellness care, education, empowerment, and life quality improvement. It is also a holistic solution for chronic pain. This practice can help clients reduce the need for prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, and surgery.
